The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and was modeled after the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. It has been called “the finest state house in America”, “the handsomest building in America”, “the greatest building in the history of the world”, “the best example of Greek Revival architecture”, and “the finest building in America’s second-largest city.” The building is owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and is operated by the Capitol Preservation Society as a museum and is open to the public.
